DESIGN PRINCIPLES [ Exercises ]
[ WEEK 1 ]
for Design principles, our lecturer is Ms. Maria. She brief us about the module information and paste it on our blog, Ms. Maria also explains our future assignments and Contrast and Gestalt Theory.
INSTRUCTION
EXERCISE 1 : CONTRAST AND GESTALT
What is Contrast?
Contrast is defined as diffrance. In art Contrast is Diffrence between art elements such as Value, Size, texture, etc. This elements are always used for art to make it more powerful like an opposite elements such as Light and Dark color. It is one of the Art principles. Silhoutte art is one of the example

What is Gestalt?
Gestalt principles or laws are rules that describe how the human eye perceives visual elements. These principles aim to show how complex scenes can be reduced to more simple shapes. They also aim to explain how the eyes perceive the shapes as a single, united form rather than the separate simpler elements involved.
here are six individual principles commonly associated with gestalt theory: similarity, continuation, closure, proximity, figure/ground, and symmetry
Similarity = Visual similar elements grouped by color, shape, texture, etc.
Continuation = the law of continuity to guide visitor's eye in a certain direction
Closure = closure allows your eye to follow something like a dotted line to its end
Proximity = refers to how close elements are to one another
Figure/Ground = similar to the closure principle in that it takes advantage of the way the brain processes negative space such as seing a cup between faces
Symmetry and Order = The law of symmetry and order is also known as prägnanz, the German word for “good figure.” What this principle says is that your brain will perceive ambiguous shapes in as simple a manner as possible.
EXPLORATION
For contrast, I used concept of Duality like Yin and Yang after rewatching ATLA and the concept of mirrored world like Alice in the wonderland. i may tweaked it in the paper.
as for Gestalt The first picture is based how people can hide their emotions. The 2nd concept is a woman smoking but i intended to change it into a woman and man. The 3rd concept is a Predator and a Prey. The sketches are done in Medibang since im not used to Photoshop or Ai yet
After the feedback was given, i started to cut papers and redraw some shapes in the paper with a light pencil to complete this exercise.
Process
the process is quite challanging as i reraly cut paper before. but i manage to finished it
FEEDBACK
- For the contrast, Mr Maria told me that the koi fish do more improvement like texture so i added Scales. as fore the Gestalt the second sketch(the smoking lady) is not clear, However i can work on The first sketch and third sketch. Ms Maria also told me that The first sketch had a vague expression so i change it to be more 'evil' expression
REFLECTION
Week 1 : i found a lot of intresting things looking for gestalt refrences as some are colorful and have a meaning to it. i really like how surreal it is
Week 2 : I realize how cutting paper is quite hard as im not skilled with cutting but from this exercise i can learn a thing or two about cutting paper carefully
[ WEEK 2 ]
Lectures : Balance, Symmetry and Emphasis.
Balance and Symmetry
Balance is a feeling of equality in weight, attention, or attraction of the various visual elements within the pictorial field as a means of accomplishing organic unity. There are many types of Balance such as; Symmetrycal balance, a very formal type of balance consisting of a mirroring of portions of an image, the symmetry gives the painting not only a sense of balance, but also a sense of calm, stability, and formality. Radial symmetry is s a variation of symmetrical balance in which the elements are arranged equally around a central point, often seen in nature, as in the petals of a tulip, the seeds of a dandelion, or in certain marine life, such as jellyfish. In asymmetrical balance, the two sides of a composition are not the same but appear to have an equal visual weight nonetheless.
Emphasis is a visual element that puts more one or two point of dominance in a work, it is used in art to attract the viewer's attention to a particular area or object. Emphasis is usually involves contrasting different elements against each other. For example, a bright, red object will stand out amongst a dull gray background. Or a straight line amongst curved lines. Or a round object amongst circular objects.
EXPLORATION | EXERCISE 2
for the Emphasis, i wanted to make a withering flower that stands out from the rest as if it was neglected. i wanted to make the symmetrical balance have a color that's dark from the cloud background so i made it more like a silhouette. The Asymmetrical is based on traditional japanese art with mountains and seas but i wanted to make it more diffrent for the final.
i didn't have any pencil colors or pastel. so i used acrylic/Watercolor for the color.
REFLECTION
it's really hard buying somethings during this pandemic, some art stuffs i bought is because i have no other choice. never the less, i had fun
[ WEEK 3 ]
Lectures : Repetition and Movement
Repetition
Repetition is simply repeating a single element many times in a design movement, stillness, design, confusion, to rebel against the notion of tradition, re-define the idea of the original and the copies, or to cast true focus on one part of the artwork that either makes the work more visible or purposely invisible.
Movement is described as a path that creates a guide or action that forces viewer's gaze to move around the piece rather than having a single focal point. This can be seen as brush tehnique or simply a visual movement from the art
EXPLORATION | EXERCISE 3
my idea for Movement is based on a fish painting on glass and for repetition is from a lot of balloon we usually see from people selling in carnivals.
after feedback i started to get worked on the piece, i usually use watercolor.
but i can only find Acrylic, i'm not good with it since i only know how to use basic watercolors
FEEDBACK
- For the movement, Ms Maria told me that try to add more water rather than black and white. The fish are rather abstract and needs to add more shape
- For repitition, the balloons are to stiff, Ms maria suggest to make it more natural like flying in the wind
REFLECTION
i'm quite confused using acrylic as a watercolor but from the recent 2 assignments. i can learn more about the flows and brushes. It was quite fun.
[ WEEK 4 ]
Lectures : Harmony and Unity
Harmony is a visual element that creates a harmony of repetition using Color, shape, texture, etc and
becomes a harmonious and balanced art which also makes Unity. Without Harmony, there's no unity.
EXPLORATION | EXERCISE 4
For this Excersie, i was a little bit confused. So i made Unity with same shapes and color while Harmony is a bit abstract.
FEEDBACK
Ms. Maria says that the hand shapes needs to be longer so it's like reaching out and add more hands while the other one is recomended to make it more like bazaar lights or flickering lights.
after the feedback i started to get working and this is the results.
[ WEEK 5 ]
SYMBOLS AND TYPOGRAPHY
for this exercise, we had to make a symbol and typography work with imagery/photo. For the symbol assignment, we can use any media so i choose to make with Medibang and Photoshop.
First, i did the sketches for Symbols. i did some research and finding my own aesthetic. Theres a lot of symbols for " Peace " itself but i choose the Dove and Laurel since it looks quite pleasing. for the Lotus, I did some research about it, it means 'to become perfect and enlightend' or Eloquence but it also can mean a Spiritual Change or just self Change. and finally, the waves are one of my favorite aesthetics.
